WW Watershed Council Calendar Winners

The Walla Walla Basin Watershed Council recently presented prize money and certificates to young artists whose art was selected for the Watershed Council 2010 Web site calendar. This year’s theme was “Water and Apples” and follows the format of an apple crate (box) label.

This year winners selected from Central Middle School students in Jennifer Hegdal’s seventh and eighth-grade are classes are: Austin Dibble, Jacob Prock, Stefanie Copeland, Courtney Brown, Sonia Campos, Rebecca Grimaldi, Thomas Hobbs, Raudel Garcia, Jesse Sandoval, Jesse Diaz, and Celeste Coble.

“Bob Chicken from the Watershed Council presented to the classes what Apple Labels were, their function in society, and the connection with our Watershed,” said Hegdal.

“The next day we discussed advertising and the struggles advertisers have when creating ads. Then the students were challenged to create an Apple Label that would attract attention and sell their apples. The labels were done in colored pencil using visuals from our local watershed,” she added.

The contest was open to individual students in grades 6-12 in the Oregon portion of the Walla Walla Basin Watershed, which includes Milton-Freewater and Weston schools. Funding for this activity was provided by the Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board and the Wildhorse Foundation.

The annual contest is an ongoing educational effort to help children, parents and teachers gain awareness of the importance of the Walla Walla Watershed to the wellbeing of our communities.
