The Calapooia Watershed Council is very excited about the impending removal of the Brownsville Dam, which will be completed by the fall of 2007. The Council is working with the Brownsville Canal Company, City of Brownsville, local residents, and engineering consultants to provide fish passage on the Calapooia River by removing the Brownsville Dam. The Calapooia watershed is home to winter steelhead and spring Chinook, both species listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Brownsville Dam is an impediment to fish passage with the current inadequate fish passage structure. The dam was originally constructed before fish passage needs of the river were understood. Since that time, the owners of the dam have come to realize the dam does not provide adequate fish passage, however they have lacked the technical skills and financial resources needed to improve fish passage at the site.
