The Applegate River Watershed Council (ARWC) implements an integrated program designed to restore and sustain ecological structure and function in the Applegate Watershed. Their program begins with stream habitat and water quality monitoring, watershed-based analysis and planning, and education and community outreach. Building on the knowledge and relationships developed through these activities, they promote conservation and stewardship practices to maintain a healthy watershed and conduct restoration projects to improve degraded areas. Strong community participation, volunteer efforts and partnerships with landowners, agencies, and interest groups are essential to the success of this program.
Executive Director Jeannell Wyntergreen tours the Applegate watershed with public and private stakeholders to discuss the need for sustainable mining in the area.
The Applegate River Watershed Council also promotes the Salmon Safe program which helps to foster fish safe ranching and farming. The Council uses targeted outreach, helping to offset the cost of certification, and provide assistance with restoration projects. The Council has certified over 20 farms and ranches encompassing over 1500 acres adjacent to salmon habitat.
