The Council began a pilot project to work with cranberry growers in their region.   There are 175 cranberry growers in Coos and Curry Counties, who manage a total of 2,500 acres, producing 11% of the nation’s cranberry crop.  The project involves working with growers to experiment with a number of new techniques.   These include: reduced risk pesticides and herbicides;  conversion to organic bogs;  Salmon-Safe certification for cranberries; irrigation efficiencies; tail-water recovery ponds;  and experiments with bog health and vigor to reduce pesticide and fertilizer applications.
